J&J...

Another notable new release this week is the debut from Johnson&Jonson on Tres Records. For those not in the know, J&J consists of up and coming emcee Blu (a stay puft favorite) and producer Mainframe. Together they make no frills indie hip-hop. The formula is simple...

J&J = dusty beats from vintage samples + clever braggadocio rhymes

DEAR SCIENCE...

Another highly anticipated release this week is Dear Science, the 4th studio album from avant-rock outfit TV On The Radio. I had high expectations for this record and the boys from TVOTR did not let me down.

Dear Science is a fantastic amalgam of robotic post-punk, experimental alt-rock, disco funk, experimental hip-hop, and more. Plus, the deluxe version of the album comes with a Prefuse 73 remix. Check out the video for lead single "Golden Age" after the jump.

MAGIC MONDAY...

Some pretty solid new releases this week. First up is the Ghostly debut from Michna entitled Magic Monday. I got this record a few days back and have been bumping it non-stop. Instrumental electro hip-hop boogie at it's finest. Get to know Michna after the break.

NoDoz: MUX MOOL

Next up for a NoDoz nod is electro/hip-hop beatsmith Mux Mool out of Brooklyn, New York. My introduction to Mr. Mool came earlier this year via the Ghostly Swim compilation where he delivered the electro burner "Night Court".

Impressed by the track I searched around for more and discovered that he released an instrumental hip-hop record earlier this year called The Drum EP. For the project, he challenged himself to make a beat a day for a week. The result is a lo-fi instrumental head nodder.

Mux Mool has proven that he can deftly cover a range of styles and I for one am excited to see what's next. Check him out below.

NoDoz: COMMON MARKET

It's been a good while since we last NoDoz'd so we're rounding out the week with two new editions. First up is hip-hop duo Common Market out of Seattle, Washington.

Consisting of emcee RA Scion and producer Sabzi, the duo makes straight forward conscious hip-hop that dares to pose questions about religion, politics, and the current state of mainstream hip-hop.

Their self-titled debut back in 2006 was an instant hit with the indie kids and their 2008 follow-up Tobacco Road is earning high praise from critics and fellow artists alike. Check out "Gol'Dust" from their new record after the jump.

ANGEL...

I'm all about instrumentals. Especially when I'm at the 9-5. One of my current favorites for cubicle listening is the new album from Anomaly entitled Terrain. It's definitely easy on the ears. Peep the video for "Angel" below.

I HEARD IT TODAY...

For his latest project Mr. Lif has decided to break away from the typical release strategy and write and release 1-2 songs every three weeks until Election Day (November 4th), following which Lif will deliver one more single based on his post electoral musings. Lif breaks down the project below...

"With a new administration on the horizon, many of us are hoping things will change for the better. We are all hoping our voices will be heard and our concerns met with solutions. This project allows me to voice and magnify the all too often ignored opinions of the American people. My research has led me to speak with so many citizens nation wide, and the stories of your struggles combined with the knowledge of my own struggles have given birth to the project now known as I Heard It Today."

The full length version of I Heard It Today will drop on Inauguration Day (January 20th) and will feature unreleased songs in addition to the singles released leading up to January 20th. Peep the first single below.

THOUGHT SO...

Dj Ease, better known as Nightmares On Wax is back on the scene with a new album full of sunkissed, psychedelic deep funk entitled Thought So... courtesy of Warp Records. It's funk, it's soul, it's hip-hop, it's roots reggae, basically...it's good. So check it out after the jump.

TRAP DOOR...

Seattle hip-hop producer Jake One is set to drop his debut solo joint White Van Music on October 7th courtesy of Rhymesayers. The album features a crazy mix of emcees (both mainstream & underground) including this little ditty with DOOM. The hotness.

I ♥ DRUM MACHINES...

Avant hip-hop producer Alias is back this week with another batch of (mostly) instrumental joints entitled Resurgam. The record marks his return to Portland, Maine after nearly 10 years of living in OAK. Hence the title Resurgam, a latin word that means "I will rise again". Necessary headphone listening.

BROTHER (WATCHING)...

This video from Shad actually precedes the one I blogged about last week, but I'm just now getting around to posting it. By far one of my favorite joints from The Old Prince. Peep it.
